URIARRA EAST

Public BBQ

The Murrumbidgee River meanders through this exceptional riverside reserve, creating natural swimming holes shallow enough for tentative paddlers yet deep enough for proper swimmers, with a small island midstream offering both a convenient rest stop and an unexpectedly placed seat. The real draw here is the rare combination of off-leash dog freedom and safe swimming, making it one of the ACT's few spots where water-loving pups can splash about unrestricted while their owners recline beneath towering pine trees. Wood-fired barbecues invite the traditional Australian cooking experience, though bringing one's own grill is advisable. Clean toilet blocks service the numerous picnic tables and benches scattered across expansive grassy areas perfect for ball games or simply sprawling out. The gentle rapids maintain their mildness even after moderate rain, and the entire setting remains remarkably peaceful despite being a short drive from Canberra. Fair warning: mobile phone reception is nonexistent, which depending on one's perspective is either a nuisance or a feature.
